FTC Warns Companies and Online Marketplaces Over Misleading “Made in USA” Claims

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued warning letters to four companies and two major online retailers regarding deceptive “Made in USA” claims. The letters were sent to Americana Liberty, Oak Street Manufacturing, Pro Sports Group, and USA Big Mountain Paper, reminding them of the FTC Act and the Made in USA Labeling Rule, which requires that products labeled “Made in USA” must be “all or virtually all” made in the United States. The FTC also warned Amazon and Walmart about third-party sellers on their platforms who may be making misleading U.S.-origin claims. These practices may violate both FTC regulations and the platforms’ terms of service.

FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson emphasized the importance of accurate labeling, stating, “‘Made in the USA’ is not just a slogan—it’s a sign that a product connects us to the workers and businesses that make America great.” He added, “Consumers want to have confidence that when they buy something labelled ‘Made in the USA’, they are supporting American workers and the American economy. Companies that falsely claim their products are ‘Made in the USA’ can expect to hear from the FTC.” The agency highlighted that violations could result in legal action, including federal lawsuits and monetary penalties. Throughout July 2025, the FTC is promoting awareness about the “Made in USA” requirements and offering guidance for businesses to ensure compliance.
