Samsung Fined $192M in Wireless Charging Patent Case

A Texas court has ordered Samsung to pay over $192 million in damages for infringing on five of Mojo Mobility’s wireless charging patents. Mojo Mobility sued the tech giant in 2022, claiming Samsung used its patented technology without permission after failed licensing negotiations in 2013. The infringement relates to wireless charging systems implemented in Samsung's Galaxy phones, smartwatches, and earbuds. The ruling was issued by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, known for handling significant patent cases.

Samsung's infringement was found to be intentional, raising the possibility of the damages being tripled. The company had previously been ordered to pay $67.5 million in damages and royalties, but confusion over royalty types led to a retrial. Samsung has denied the validity of the patents and sued Mojo Mobility in 2023 to overturn them, though its attempts failed. If Samsung fails to comply, its devices could lose wireless charging capabilities.
