U.S. Court Orders Samsung to Pay $191M Over OLED Patent Infringement

Technology company Samsung Electronics has been ordered by a U.S. federal court jury in Texas to pay $191.4 million in damages to Pictiva Display for infringing patents related to OLED display technology. Pictiva, a subsidiary of Key Patent Innovations, filed the lawsuit in 2023, alleging that multiple Samsung products, including Galaxy smartphones, wearables, and televisions, violated patents designed to enhance OLED brightness, resolution, and power efficiency. The jury found Samsung liable for infringing two out of five asserted patents, while rejecting claims on the remaining three.

Samsung has denied the allegations, arguing that Pictiva’s patents are invalid. Following the ruling, the company announced plans to appeal and has filed a petition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to challenge the patents in question. This marks Samsung’s second major legal setback in recent years, following a $445.5 million damages verdict in a separate case involving Collison Communications over wireless technology patents.
