Omnicom Finalizes IPG Takeover After Securing EU Clearance

Omnicom Group has closed its more than $13 billion acquisition of Interpublic Group, forming the largest advertising holding company by revenue. The deal brings IPG agencies and data assets such as Acxiom under Omnicom’s control and reflects the sector’s push toward scale as data, attribution systems, and AI capabilities become central to client work. The merger received unconditional approval from European regulators, and both companies estimate roughly $750 million in annual cost synergies once integration progresses. 

The transaction arrives during a period of consolidation across major agency networks, with firms reevaluating portfolios, shedding underperforming assets, and pursuing data-rich properties to support outcome-based marketing. Ahead of the acquisition, IPG reduced its workforce and streamlined operations, signaling that additional changes may follow as the combined company aligns overlapping functions and client teams.

Competitors are expected to watch the integration closely, as large combinations often create short-term openings in the market. The deal also caps a regulatory process that included a consent order with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission limiting certain exclusionary practices, highlighting the heightened attention applied to mergers involving significant data and media assets.
