Nokia Files Lawsuit Against Warner Bros Over Video-Streaming Patents

Finnish technology company Nokia has expanded its U.S. patent litigation efforts with a new lawsuit against Warner Bros Discovery in a Delaware federal court. The complaint alleges that Warner’s streaming platforms infringe Nokia’s patented video-encoding and decoding technology, which the company says enables efficient compression of raw video files for high-definition streaming. According to the filing, Warner has allegedly violated 13 Nokia patents. Nokia noted that it first informed Warner in 2023 about the need for a licensing agreement, but both companies failed to reach mutually acceptable terms.

Nokia has filed similar infringement cases against Paramount, Acer, and other media and device companies over their streaming functionalities. In a statement, the company said it hopes Warner will “engage with us to reach an agreement to pay for the use of our technologies in their streaming services.” The lawsuit seeks monetary damages, though the complaint does not specify the amount. Warner Bros Discovery did not immediately comment on the allegations.
