Doug Gurr Nominated to Lead UK Competition Watchdog Permanently

Doug Gurr, a former executive at Amazon, has been selected as the preferred candidate to become the Permanent Chair of the UK Competition and Markets Authority. UK Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle announced the nomination after Gurr served as interim Chair since early 2025, when he replaced former leader Marcus Bokkerink. During his interim tenure, Gurr worked with the government to support policies aimed at strengthening economic growth and simplifying certain regulatory requirements for businesses. The CMA is currently reviewing how it evaluates mergers and acquisitions following criticism that earlier decisions slowed corporate activity in the UK.

Kyle praised Gurr’s leadership and highlighted the role the regulator plays in supporting the economy. He said, “Under Doug Gurr's leadership as interim chair, the CMA is playing a key role in delivering the government's pro-growth agenda, ensuring the UK is a place where businesses can grow and invest with confidence.” Gurr also welcomed the nomination, stating, “I have enjoyed my time at the CMA and can see a clear contribution we can make here through promoting competition and protecting consumers.” He is expected to appear before Parliament’s Business and Trade Select Committee before the appointment receives final approval.
