American Airlines Sues JetBlue Over NEA Termination Dispute

American Airlines has filed a lawsuit against JetBlue to recover over $1 million following the termination of their Northeast Alliance (NEA). The suit, filed in Texas, seeks monetary relief, excluding legal fees and costs. In a letter to employees, American Airlines Vice Chair and Chief Strategy Officer Steve Johnson addressed ongoing media reports and clarified that discussions with JetBlue about a new partnership had not moved forward. The NEA, initially approved in January 2021, allowed the two airlines to coordinate flights and share revenue across key northeastern markets. However, a 2023 federal court ruling found the arrangement violated antitrust laws, and a subsequent appeals court upheld the decision, leading to the alliance's dissolution.

Despite the legal dispute, American Airlines continues to expand its presence in New York and Boston. Johnson noted that the airline has launched over 20 new routes from LaGuardia and JFK since reclaiming slots from JetBlue. American now offers more than 250 daily nonstop flights from New York in partnership with international carriers such as British Airways, Iberia, and Qatar. Meanwhile, JetBlue acknowledged the lawsuit and stated it had cooperated in unwinding the NEA, but declined further comment due to the pending litigation. The company previously expressed interest in forming new airline partnerships.
